GoHighLevel Starter Plan Review: Is the $97 Plan Worth It?

This GoHighLevel starter plan review answers one question. Should you pay $97 a month for the entry tier?
If you run one business, or one business plus a client or two, I think yes. If you’re building an agency, you’ll hit the ceiling fast.
The real monthly bill runs higher than $97, because texts, emails, phone numbers and AI are billed on top. I’ll show you where that money goes.
Quick numbers
| Price | $97 per month, or $970 per year |
| Sub-accounts | 3 |
| Contacts and users | Unlimited |
| Free trial | 14 days |
| Best for | One business, a solo marketer, a freelancer with 1 to 2 clients |

What the GoHighLevel starter plan is
The GoHighLevel starter plan is the cheapest tier. On the pricing page it’s labeled Agency Starter, and the name makes it sound like a lite version.
You get the same core tools as the pricier plans.
The tiers differ in how many sub-accounts you can run and in agency extras like white-labeling. That’s most of it.
GoHighLevel starter plan pricing
The monthly price is $97. Pay yearly and it’s $970, which works out to about $81 a month.
The annual deal saves you roughly 2 months. I’d still pay monthly for the first 2 or 3 months, until you know the platform fits how you work.
Here’s what the $97 covers:
- 3 sub-accounts
- Unlimited contacts
- Unlimited users (your whole team)
- 24/7 support
- All core features
The unlimited contacts part matters. A list of 500 people and a list of 50,000 people cost the same base price. You pay for the messages you send to them, which comes next.
What you’ll pay on top of $97

The $97 buys the software. Anything that costs GoHighLevel money to deliver gets billed from a prepaid wallet in your account:
- SMS and calls, charged per message or per minute
- Email sending, charged per email
- Phone numbers, charged monthly per number
- The AI Employee add-on, $97 a month per sub-account for unlimited use, or pay per use (around $0.02 per AI conversation message when I checked)
Here’s a rough monthly budget for one local business using it for its own marketing:
| Item | Rough monthly cost |
|---|---|
| Starter plan | $97 |
| SMS and calls | $20 to $80 |
| Email sending | $10 to $40 |
| AI Employee (optional) | $0 to $97 |
| Total | $127 to $314 |
Those usage numbers are planning estimates pulled from published breakdowns, and they swing with how much you message. Some write-ups put a busy single-shop setup at $250 to $450 a month all-in.
Check GoHighLevel’s current rate card before you budget. Usage prices change.
GoHighLevel Starter Plan Review : Plan Features
This is the part that sells the plan. The GoHighLevel starter plan features cover most of what a local business needs to get leads and book them:
- CRM and contact management. Every lead and customer, with tags and a shared inbox.
- Pipelines. Drag deals through stages like new lead, quoted, won.
- Funnel and website builder. Landing pages, simple sites and sales funnels.
- Email and SMS marketing. Campaigns and one-to-one texts (usage billed).
- Calendars and booking. People book themselves in, and reminders go out automatically.
- Automation workflows. A text after a missed call, an email after a form fill.
- Reputation management. Ask for reviews and track what comes back.
- Courses and communities. Sell and host training content.
- Forms, surveys and invoicing. Collect info and get paid.
All of it sits under one login. If you pay today for a CRM, an email tool, a scheduler, a form builder and a funnel builder, that’s 5 subscriptions that can collapse into 1.
The catch is the learning curve. There’s a lot of platform here, and I’d budget a couple of weeks before it stops feeling cluttered.
Does GoHighLevel Starter include email and SMS?
The tools are included. The sending is billed by usage.
You can build email campaigns, run two-way text conversations and set up automated sequences on Starter. Nothing in that feature set is locked to a higher tier.
But every text and every email draws down your wallet balance.
Three habits will save you grief:
- Top up the wallet before you launch a campaign.
- Turn on auto-recharge so a workflow doesn’t quietly stop at $0.
- Watch your spend closely in month one. One big SMS blast to a large list costs more than you’d guess.
Agencies on the Unlimited plan can rebill clients for phone and email usage. Starter users can’t, which only matters if you’re reselling the service.
How many sub accounts in GoHighLevel Starter?
Three.
A sub-account is a separate workspace with its own contacts, pipelines, funnels and settings. Agencies use one per client. A business with several locations might use one per location.
Your own business takes one of the three, so you have room for 2 clients. Contacts and users stay unlimited inside each account, so the cap is on the number of workspaces, not their size.
To get a fourth, you move up to the Unlimited plan at $297 a month.
Some third-party sites say Starter includes just 1 sub-account. GoHighLevel’s own pricing page says 3, and that’s the number I’d trust. Confirm it on the page before you pay, in case it changes.
GoHighLevel starter plan limitations
These are the gohighlevel starter plan limitations that actually decide things:
- The 3 sub-account cap. Sign a fourth client and you have to upgrade. No workaround.
- No white-labeling. Clients see GoHighLevel branding. Making it look like your own software is an Unlimited feature.
- No SaaS mode. Reselling GoHighLevel as your own subscription product needs the $497 plan.
- Basic API access sits on Unlimited. Developers building custom connections will want the higher tier.
- Usage costs. $97 doesn’t go far if you text a big list every week.
For a single business, none of these hurt. For an agency, the first 3 hurt a lot.
GoHighLevel starter plan for small business
The GoHighLevel starter plan for small business fits best where the money comes from leads and appointments. Dentists, gyms, salons, home service contractors, real estate agents, coaches and local consultants all run the same loop: catch a lead, reply fast, book a call, follow up, ask for a review.
Starter covers that whole loop.
Missed-call text back is the feature that sells most local owners. Someone calls, you can’t pick up, and GoHighLevel texts them within seconds with a link to book a time. Plenty of jobs go to whoever answers first, so that one workflow can pay for the plan.
Who it fits less well:
- Very small businesses with a short contact list and basic needs. A simpler CRM at a lower price probably does the job.
- Online stores with large product catalogs. Dedicated ecommerce platforms are stronger there.
- Anyone without time to set it up. The software pays off when somebody builds the automations. If nobody will, you’re renting tools that sit idle.
GoHighLevel starter plan pros and cons
Pros
- All core features are included
- Unlimited contacts and unlimited team members
- One login can replace several separate tools
- 3 sub-accounts, enough for your business plus 2 clients
- 14-day free trial
- Annual billing drops the price to about $81 a month
- 24/7 support
Cons
- Hard cap at 3 sub-accounts
- No white-labeling
- No SaaS mode
- SMS, email, phone and AI are billed on top
- Steep learning curve for beginners
- Real monthly cost lands well above $97 for active users
Is GoHighLevel starter plan worth it?
I think it’s worth it for one type of buyer: someone who’ll use at least 3 of the tools together.
Do this before you decide. Write down every tool you pay for that GoHighLevel could replace, and add up the monthly cost. Then add $50 to $150 for usage.
If your total comes out lower than what you pay now, or close to it with better automation, start the trial. That’s the whole test.
It’s also a decent way for a freelancer to try the agency model with 1 or 2 clients without paying $297 up front.
I wouldn’t buy it if you only need a calendar and an email list. That’s a lot of platform for two jobs.
And if you already know you’ll land 4 or more clients, start on Unlimited. You’ll outgrow Starter within months.

When to upgrade

Look at the $297 Unlimited plan when any of these happen:
- You’re about to add a fourth sub-account
- You want your own branding on the platform
- You want to rebill clients for messages
- You need API access
The extra $200 a month gets covered quickly. Charge 4 clients just $50 each for the platform and you’re even.
My take
Start the 14-day trial and build one thing: the missed-call text back. If it books a single appointment you’d have lost, you have your answer.
